Our team ...

Nature Child's projects have been developed by a team of experienced educators, including primary school teachers, environmentalists, artists, holistic practitioners and forest and bush-craft experts.

The Nature Child project is the culmination of thirty-five years’ of experience in facilitating children’s learning, creativity and well-being, by primary teacher and artist Katherine Thompson. Kate moved to Wales in 2009, drawn by her lifelong love of the Black Mountains. She began connecting with the community, delivering workshops and creative projects and working with primary schools in and around Brecon.
Galvanised by her experience of nature as a resource for learning and well-being and concerned by the drastic impact on young children of the COVID-19 Pandemic, in 2020 she established a four-acre site of outstanding natural beauty as an outside classroom. Volunteers helped to make the site safe to use as a learning space. Teachers, children and parents came together to raise funds to pay for transport to bring children out to the site.
The impact was immediate and inspirational beyond Kate’s highest expectations. Her previous experience hadn’t prepared her for the benefit that this untouched and multisensory 'Eden' would bring. It was obvious that the project needed to root itself and grow. A highly skilled and diverse team of educators were brought together and in 2021, Nature Child was established as a CIC.
Collaboration with other local practitioners and organisations supported and enriched provision and helped the project expand. Nature Child now offers a wide range of cross-curricular learning experiences for primary children in the Nature classroom, separate, bespoke provision for children with Additional Learning Needs and an in-school re-wilding and growing project, 'Grow, Cook. Eat'.
